60th Street Apartment Fire Press Release

The Raytown Fire Protection District, in cooperation with local, state and federal agencies has completed the fire scene investigatory phase of the apartment fire that occurred in the early morning hours of February 7th, 2016.  The ATF press release is copied below:

The Fire District regrets the loss of life associated with this incident and expresses our sympathy to the families affected by this fire.

Press Conference Notification

The Raytown Fire Protection District will hold a joint press conference with the ATF at 3:00 PM today.  We will provide an update on the status of the incident and investigation at 8911 East 60th Street in Raytown.  The briefing will be held at the headquarters station of the Fire District, located at 6020 Raytown Trafficway, Raytown, Missouri 64133.  If you wish to attend please park in the rear parking lot of the fire station and enter by the double doors near the cell tower.

The Raytown Fire Protection District regrets to report a second fatality resulting from the apartment fire in Raytown on February 7, 2016.  Cherri Roberts, 59, was rescued by fire crews during the fire.  She suffered significant injuries and had been in critical condition since the incident.  Mrs. Roberts succumbed to her injuries last night.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.

Firefighters rescued a 55 year old female, a 5 year old child and a 18 month old infant from the secondf floor of a three story apartment building.  The 5 year old was pronounced dead at a local hospital, the 55 year old and the 18 month old remain in critical condition. 

Upon arrival, crews reported heavy fire and smoke showing.    Heavy fire conditions complicated the rescue efforts, at one point the firefighters hoseline was burned in half cutting off thier exit.  The conditions worsened, forcing the crew to carry the infant from the second floor to the third floor where firefighters from KCFD were able assist by laddering the outside of the building and lowering the infant to the ground.

In less than 10 minutes from the time the crews exacuated everyone from the structure the roof supports began to fail causing the roof to collapse into the structure.

The Raytown Fire Protection District requested the assistance of the Missouri State Fire Marshal due to the size and and scope of the fire scene.  The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

In total, 26 persons were displaced as a result of this apartment fire, the Red Cross is working to find them places to stay.
