On Saturday September 29, 2012 the Raytown Fire Protection
District rescued a citizen from a house fire at 3:30 in the morning. The home did not have working smoke
detectors. The Fire District and
Volunteers from the Red Cross plan to canvas the area near the incident to inform
residents on fire safety and increase the number of homes with working
detectors.
Additionally, the Fire District currently has a program in place
to install free smoke detectors to any Raytown homeowner who could otherwise
not afford them on their own. Citizens
who meet these requirements should call 816-737-6034 to schedule an install.
According to the NFPA working smoke detectors reduces the
risk of dying in home fires by fifty percent.

Update on 6828 Vermont Fire
Update on Saturday Morning Fire at 6828 Vermont
Raytown Fire has learned that the other two occupants of 6828 Vermont were not home at the time of the fire. The family has reported that both individuals are safe and accounted for. The occupant who was rescued by fire personnel remains hospitalized at an area burn center. We have not received an update on that person's condition. The damage to the home is extensive and the cause is still under investigation.

Early Saturday Structure Fire Seriously Injures Occupant and Destroys Raytown Home

Raytown Fire was dispatched to a residential structure fire early Saturday morning. The caller was a passerby who used a cell phone to report the fire. Raytown Police arrived on scene and found the structure heavily involved with fire venting through the roof at the west end of the home. Raytown Engine 1 arrived on scene, deployed an attack line, made entry through the front door and began to search for occupants. During the search they located a female victim in a bedroom and removed her from the structure. The rescue was complicated by the heavy fire involvement. Raytown Engine 2 arrived on scene and assisted with moving the victim to an ambulance. Raytown EMS transported the victim to a local hospital; the patient was subsequently transferred to a burn center with life threatening injuries. Two other occupants were not believed to be home at the time of the fire. The fire was contained to the structure with heavy damage to the building and contents. Kansas City Fire Department responded to assist with extinguishing the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined and the investigation is ongoing.

For over 40 years during the Labor Day weekend we have been raising money for MDA by asking you to fill our boots at intersections, however this year we were unable to collect on Friday and Saturday because of the rain. So if you see a firefighter at in intersection today please stop and help.

2012 Code books available for public viewing
Copies
of the 2012 International Building code and the 2012 International Fire code
were placed for public viewing at 6020 Raytown Trafficway on August 30, 12 at
0900 hrs. These copies shall be available for public viewing Monday through
Friday from 0900-1700 hrs each day. This will remain in effect till the end of
the business day on December 7, 2012.

Fire Fighters vs Cops for Dream Factory
Members of both the Raytown Fire Protection District and the Raytown Police competed in a charity dance competition on August 16, 2012. Members of the audience then voted with their dollars with all the proceeds benefiting Larry Moore and the Dream Factory of Kansas City. Raytown Fire was dispatched to a reported
residential structure fire on Sunday morning. The caller stated that he
returned home and found his couch on fire when he opened the door to the
residence. No one else was home at the time of the fire. Engine 1 arrived on
scene, deployed an attack line and achieved a rapid knockdown. Fire damage was
limited to the room of origin with smoke damage throughout the structure. The
caller had minor smoke inhalation and refused treatment or transport.
Investigators believe smoking materials may have caused the fire.

Additional information:
Units responded to a commercial structure fire at a fast food
restaurant, initial crews reported fire on the outside of the structure and
heavy smoke from the roof. Crews were able to confine the fire to the attic of
the structure. Additional units from
KCFD were requested due to the extreme heat.
All firefighters are required by policy to be evaluated by EMS after 20
minutes of work at a fire. One firefighter was initially unable to return to
work following this evaluation, however after additional rest and water on the
scene their vital signs return to normal and they were cleared to return to
work.
Investigators have determined the fire originated outside of the
structure, but the exact cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
