Additional information: Raytown Fire Protection District responded to the report of an apartment fire on the third floor of a six-unit building.  Upon arrival units found heavy smoke and fire in the rear of the structure.  The heavy winds today made extinguishment difficult, but units held the fire to a single unit.  Two additional units did receive water damage as a result of the extinguishment.  No injuries were reported and six residents have been displaced.  All of the smoke detectors found in the structure were not in working condition.

Raytown Fire and the Red Cross to Distribute Free Safety Information and Coupons for a Free Smoke Detectors to the Neighbors of the Recent Fire Rescue

Additional information:

On Saturday September 29, 2012 the Raytown Fire Protection District rescued a citizen from a house fire at 3:30 in the morning.  The home did not have working smoke detectors.  The Fire District and Volunteers from the Red Cross plan to canvas the area near the incident to inform residents on fire safety and increase the number of homes with working detectors.

Additionally, the Fire District currently has a program in place to install free smoke detectors to any Raytown homeowner who could otherwise not afford them on their own.  Citizens who meet these requirements should call 816-737-6034 to schedule an install.

According to the NFPA working smoke detectors reduces the risk of dying in home fires by fifty percent.
